Experts Meeting in Montevideo Call for Latin American
Regional Cooperation on Climate Change
More than 104 delegates from thirteen Latin American countries
and the United States recommended a number of national, regional
and international research and policy measures to counter the
negative implications of climate change at a meeting in Montevideo
in April.
Hon. Raul Ituria, Minister of Defense of Uruguay, opened a workshop
on Climate Change Vulnerability and Adaptation in Latin America,
which presented results of the US-supported climate change country
studies conducted in Central and South American countries. Workshop
recommendations included greater access to effective information
and scientific data bases, establishment of an observational and
monitoring network, development and improvement of climate change
vulnerability and impact assessment tools. The workshop was co-sponsored
by the Climate Institute along with the US Country Studies Program,
Comision Nacional sobre el Cambio Global and the Inter-American
Institute for Global Change Research.
Further information may be obtained from Dr. Ata Qureshi, Director
of Global Environmental Programs at the Climate Institute, who
helped organize the workshop.
