Green Energy
Sustainable Energy
Since energy use and production contribute over 88% of the greenhouse
gas emissions, pragmatic changes in the energy sector have the
potential to reduce emissions significantly. Many policy initiatives
now promote sustainable energy or green energy options.
The concept of sustainable energy or green energy embraces practices,
policies, and technologies that provide energy at the least financial,
environmental and social costs. When these costs are factored
in calculating life-cycle costs for fossil fuels, sustainable
energy options make an even more compelling case for long-term
strategic applications.
Even if new sources of energy appear quickly, people would have
to rely on fossil fuels for many years. During this period there
are three main things that can be done: 1) using limited energy
resources more efficiently, 2) increasing the use of renewable
energy sources, and 3) shifting from more carbon- to less carbon-intensive
fuels, for instance, from coal to oil to natural gas.
