Duke University
At Duke University, the Environmental Alliance student group decided to kick-start recycling and conservation by establishing a competition called the Eco-Olympics. For one month, student dorms compete against each other by recycling and conserving as much water and energy as they can. At the end of each competition, the dorm with the highest conservation and recycling score wins prizes. The element of competition is a clever way to get more students involved in environmental measures. As part of the competition includes participation in informational sessions and attendance at educational presentations, there are also long-term benefits that students can take away from the Eco-Olympics. In order to make this contest possible, Duke’s Facilities Management Department and residential advisers serve as competition monitors.
