Policy Resources

There are a wide range of Policy Resources on climate change, including a growing number of information technology based resources, such as Dealing with Climate Change Policies and Measures Database, put together by the International Energy Agency; or Earth Trends, a database maintained by the World Resources Institute and focuses on sustainable development policies and measures. While these resources provide information on policies and measures in many countries, there are also a burgeoning number of region, country and local specific resources.

Policy and Measures Databases

  • Dealing with Climate Change Policies and Measure Database (International Energy Agency) is an excellent source of information on climate change policies in IEA member countries (e.g., many OECD or industrialized countries), including Brazil, China, the European Union, India, Mexico, Russia and South Africa.  The database has over 1,500 records going back to 1999 and is regularly reviewed by IEA members and policy experts.1  The site actually has two separate databases:
  • Earth Trends (World Resources Institute) is a database of sustainable development policies and measures (SDPAMs) in a set of key developing countries. WRI hopes the database will serve several purposes:
    • Recognition: to counter the notion in some Annex 1 countries that developing nations are not limiting their emissions.
    • Learning: to help exchange of experience and to highlight potential areas of cooperation between countries with similar goals.
    • Definition: as SD-PAMs are proposed as potential components of an agreement on the post-2012 climate policy regime, to help explore what types of policies and measures might be defined as SD-PAMs.2
